A pet is what you make it

When you think about a pet, you probably think about dogs and cats, perhaps a rat or hamster, tortoise or snake, a bird, even a chicken. But a praying mantis? Well, why not?

Lynda Nunn of Walnut Creek sent me some photos of a mantis that has made a home in her sunflowers. Lynda started talking to her (she prefers to think of it as a she, and by the size of it, I’d say she’s right) and the mantis seemed to be listening. She always permits Lynda to take some pictures, and at times, she seems to mug for the camera.

“Pet” might not be the right designation for the mantis, which Lynda has named Pickles, as the insect remains free and happily living in the fading sunflowers. Linda calls it a friendship, and I say, good. If we treated all creatures as friends instead of inconveniences and creepy crawling things, the world would be a lot nicer, and our gardens would be much fuller.
